Wiseman & Coldfoot — Wilderness Area in Wiseman, Alaska
Highest-latitude road-accessible aurora site in the US — Brooks Range, Dalton Highway.

The Dalton Highway runs 414 miles from Fairbanks to the Prudhoe Bay oilfield, and 250 miles into that drive you cross the Arctic Circle and reach Coldfoot truck stop and the village of Wiseman. The latitude (67.4°N — north of all of Iceland and most of mainland Norway) is unbeatable, the dark sky is total (no settlements for 100 km in any direction), and the Brooks Range mountains add foreground topography most aurora photos lack.

What to expect
Most visitors come on a Northern Alaska Tour Co. 2- or 3-day package — they fly you up, you bus back down (or vice versa). Independent driving in winter is technically possible but is a real expedition. The Boreal Lodging guesthouse in Wiseman is the lodging.
