Snæfellsnes Peninsula — Wilderness Area in Hellnar / Arnarstapi, Iceland
'Iceland in miniature' — Kirkjufell mountain is among the most-photographed aurora foregrounds.

Snæfellsnes packs Iceland's whole landscape vocabulary into a 90-km peninsula: a glacier-capped stratovolcano (Snæfellsjökull), basalt sea cliffs, black-pebble beaches, lava-tube caves, and Kirkjufell — the mountain that ended up on every aurora photographer's portfolio in the 2010s. It's a 2-hour drive from Reykjavík, so day-tripping is feasible, but staying overnight in Hellnar or Stykkishólmur gets you onto the road during the aurora window without a 4-hour round trip.
