Senja is what Lofoten was before Instagram. The island is roughly the same size as Lofoten with one tenth the visitors, a National Tourist Route along its outer coast, and lodges that actively turn off exterior lights between 22:00 and 06:00 in winter. The viewing setup is simple: pick a cabin facing north, walk onto the porch, look up.

Drive in from Tromsø (3 hours) or fly into Bardufoss. Hamn i Senja and Senja Fjordhotell are the two lodges with restaurants. Most other accommodation is self-catering Airbnb-style cabins.
